yes, I am looking for an answer to this question.

HL was trying to find abalone at the Marina supermarket, and found this at US$6/can - we thought we found a dirt cheap deal here, after hearing that abalone is supposedly cheaper here.

But KK, who had the dinner with us, said it is not, and I also thought it doesn't look like abalone, so I decided to post this question on the blog and "ask the audience" :)

hmmm yahoo-searched and this topshell is another type of shell fish, tastes and looks similar to abalone and is a cheaper alternative to abalone. I thought abalone has another piece of 'meat' on top.. looks like a 'yuan2 bao3' to me? :)

If I remembered correctly, it was in the news weeks ago that in TW there are ppl who used topshell to disguise off as abalone in restaurant cos once sliced it looks and tastes kinda the same...

To me no difference.. both as chewy and kinda tasteless.. hahaha :P
